What the project is for
The Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Programme is a major UK infrastructure initiative led by Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N), established in 2023. It aims to develop and deploy a new fleet of small nuclear reactors to support energy security, provide reliable low-carbon electricity, and contribute to the UK’s transition to net zero. In June 2025, Rolls-Royce SMR was selected as the Preferred Bidder. Work on design, licensing and site development is underway this decade, with the first reactors expected to be operational in the mid-to-late 2030s. The programme focuses on selecting the right technology and securing suitable sites. GBE-N owns Oldbury and Wylfa, with Wylfa selected in November 2025, and is building the delivery capability needed to bring projects forward.
